ABC Programme

Key Information
Full name of Instrument & Measure (English):
ABC Programme - Low Carbon Agriculture
Description:
ABC is a sectoral plan for the mitigation and adaptation of climate change, based on a low carbon emission from agriculture activities, also known as the ABC Plan (Low Carbon Emission Agriculture Plan). The overall objective of the ABC Plan is to ensure the continued improvement of sustainable management and use of natural resources by the agriculture sector, with a view to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing CO2 uptake on the vegetation and soil, while increasing productivity. The four-year programme is supported by a £24.9 million ($39.2 million) grant from the United Kingdom’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs through the UK’s International Climate Fund to invest in low carbon agriculture and forest conservation. The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB) administers the grant and the project. Besides financing farmers, the project invests in training, capacity building and knowledge transfer to improve producers’ ability to adopt measures targeting sustainable land use with low carbon emissions, forest management and environmental protection. It also aims to reduce the poverty and vulnerability of rural populations.
