Ethanol blending mandate
The government of Brazil sets a mandatory ethanol blend in the gasoline. The obligation applies to vehicle manufacturers and fuel producers of Brazil. The goal of the law is to reduce pollution emissions levels generated by the transport sector. The blend percentage can be changed by the Ministry of Agriculture and the Inter-ministerial Council for Sugar and Alcohol (Conselho Interministerial do Açúcar e Álcool - CIMA) but it must be no less than 20% and no more than 27%. The blending mandate changes over time: 1993 22%; 2007 25%; 2011 20%; 2013 25%; 2015 27%.
