Objectives of the Regulations a. To facilitate efficient use of energy by enforcing Kenya Standards known as Minimum Energy Performance Standards (MEPS), which specifies the minimum efficiency of selected electrical appliances used in Kenya. The regulations governs manufacture, importation, distribution and testing of the designated electrical appliances under MEPS. They will also complement the implementation of the Energy (Energy Management) Regulations, 2012. b. To help in consumers choosing products which save energy and thus money. This shall enhance overall efficiency of the national economy thereby increasing consumer welfare and improving trade relations. This will also reduce strain on the energy infrastructure thereby deferring expensive capacity investments and improving reliability. c. To provide incentives for the industry to develop and invest in energy efficient product design. This shall enhance the market for quality products thereby strengthening local capacity and providing a bigger market for efficient technology and preventing dumping of obsolete technologies. d. Help the Country meet climate change goals and avert urban/regional pollution. The standards can achieve emission reductions at net negative cost to society.
