The overall objective of Agro Ecological Zoning of sugarcane is to provide technical support to formulate of public policies aimed at the expansion and sustainable production of sugar cane in Brazil. Through digital processing techniques a valuation of the potential land for crop production of cane sugar in rainfed conditions (without full irrigation) was carried out based on the physical, chemical and mineralogical soils characteristics expressed spatially in soil surveys and studies on climate risk related to the requirements of the crop (rainfall, temperature, drought and frost occurrence). The ZAE Cana includes a set of strict environmental, economic, social, climate and soil restrictions that serve as mandatory guidelines, limiting future expansion of sugarcane to 7.5% of the Brazilian territory (or 64.7 million hectares). Under the criteria, 92.5% of the country is not suitable for planting sugarcane. Areas considered "technically fit" for sugarcane are as "more than sufficient" to meet future ethanol and sugar demand in coming decades, from both the domestic and global markets. With the use of new technologies, ethanol production will expand by 80% per planted hectare, which means future production increases will not necessarily require expanding the cultivated area.
