The nature protection laws of the federal states contain general regulations governing the protection and maintenance of nature as the cornerstone for human, animal and plant life. It obliges them to protect the natural resources for their livelihoods with the goal to preserve diversity, beauty in natural landscapes. The human influence must be kept as low as possible. Especially, landscapes with still functioning biotopes are of top priority for nature protection. The federal legislation includes the EU Birds Directive, Habitats directive and Water Framework Directive
